【短语来源】In parade-ground terminology a rank is a line of troops standing shoulder to shoulder and a file is one in which they stand one behind the other. The rank and file are therefore the whole body of ordinary troops in a formation. Officers on parade stand outside it.

在阅兵场，rank是指并排而立的一行，file是指前后成队的一列，所以the rank and file就是指方阵列队的整体。
