给英语学习者一个建议：

把英语学习，当作宗教修行。让英语成为你的信仰。

1. fast in a glass box under constant surveillance
在须臾不离的众目睽睽之下，于玻璃箱内（表演）断食
注意：军警的监视、医生的观察，都用surveillance。

2. such feats of emaciation
这类销形伤身的技艺
注意：emaciate的读音。很多学习型词典只收emaciated（因疾病或缺乏食物而瘦弱的）。

3. his prodigies of starving
他数次令人称奇的忍饥挨饿
注意：①“神童”是a child/an infant prodigy。②由starve可联想到famine，然后把莎士比亚《十四行诗集》第一首温习几遍，背熟。

4. It is not a vocation, but simply a distaste for ordinary living, that made him into an artist.
并不是职业，而只是对日常生活的厌弃，使他成了艺术家。
注意：①distaste无论作名词还是动词，重音都在第二音节。②make sb. into sth.在此无“逼迫”之义，仅指改变性格、工作、地位等。

5. the ordinary bestial world
寻常的动物世界
注意：bestial的读音，莫受beast影响。beast是“动物”，尤其指大型（四足），或具攻击性，或罕见者，语体古旧或正式。“美女与野兽”是Beauty and the Beast，注意冠词的使用。

6. The joy of life glowed so fiercely from the furnace of its throat.
在咽喉这座洪炉中，生命的欢愉闪耀着强光。
注意：①glow有光热而无焰。②把throat比作furnace，很奇崛。红扑扑的意象，令我想起唐诗：“赧郎明月夜，炉火照星天”。
